* * *

Later that morning, I sent him a note asking if he wanted to have lunch with me. When he replied yes, I told him to meet me in the lobby at eleven. My work load was piling up and I was missing deadlines, but I didn't care anymore. Only one thing was on my mind. When Noah got out of the elevator and walked toward me, I smiled.

“You're on time. I like that.”

“I try to be,” he said. “Where did you want to eat?”

“How about that sub shop that just opened up?”

“Sounds good to me.”

We walked three blocks to the new sandwich shop. Noah opened the door and let me walk in first. Was he just pretending to be my boyfriend? Or was he always that nice and considerate? I pushed the questions to the back of my mind as we found a seat in the corner. After we had ordered our sandwiches on a screen at our table, I turned to him.

“How's your day going?”

“Not too bad, I guess. I'm working on a rather interesting story about...”

“You know what? Let's not talk about work, okay?”

“Because of...”

“Yeah,” I interrupted.

“Okay. So, why's a beautiful woman like you still single?”

“Shh. Let's not talk about that either.”

“You're a real secretive woman.”

“I guess I have to be.”

He nodded. Our subs arrived with drink a moment later.

“You two always order the same thing?” the waitress asked, then added, “You make a cute couple.”

We both smiled at each other than up at her.

“Not always,” I said.

We ate our ham and cheese sandwiches as the rest of the crowded restaurant faded away into the background. He had a really nice face. I'd never really noticed that about him before. Between his handsome facial features and his muscular body, I began to wonder what it would be like to really have him as a boyfriend.

“You're quiet,” he said.

“Just eating and thinking.”

“You always think when you eat?”

“Not always. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“The job?”

“Yeah, that...”

I let my voice trail off, and we went back to eating. When lunch was finished, I paid for both of us.

“I can get it,” he said, reaching out to grab my arm as I reached to put my credit card into the slot on the small terminal where we'd ordered.

“No, it's fine.”

He seemed a little hurt by not being able to pay, which made even more questions pop up in my mind. We walked back to our office building slowly. Neither of us wanted to return to work. Before we went inside, I stopped him and leaned up to give him a quick kiss on the cheek. The smile that spread over his face was like a flower blooming to the first sun in the morning.

“What was that for?” he asked.

“No reason. I have to work late, but you have a key so just let yourself in.”

“Okay. See you later.”

“Soon...” I said then rushed back inside.
